Rick Hall Bio

Muscle Shoals Alabama - Rick Hall’s credits include producing and engineering hit records for Aretha Franklin, Bobbie Gentry, Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, The Osmonds, Mac Davis, Duane Allman, Etta James, Alabama and many more.  Mr. Hall started in Florence Alabama with partners Tom Stafford and Billy Sherrill.  The trios business was called “Florence Alabama Music Enterprises.”  After two years of moderate success the partnership dissolved and Hall moved to Muscle Shoals, carrying with him the name of the publishing company, which he shortened to FAME.

In Muscle Shoals Hall discovered Arthur Alexander and recorded the monster hit,  “You Better Move On”, which was later covered by the Rolling Stones.  With royalties from that song Hall was able to build his own studio on Avalon Ave.  That very same building, today, houses two recording studios, three publishing companies and a production company.

Hall’s first #1 pop and R&B hit was the Clarence Carter smash “Patches”.  In the 1970s Hall began producing the Osmonds where he had five consecutive gold records.  In one year, Hall’s production of the group resulted in the sale of 11 million records.  Hall was awarded Billboard’s producer of the year in 1971.  Hall continued his success in the 1980s with a string of country hits including Jerry Reeds #1 record “She Got the Goldmine”.  Up to current day, Hall has continued to produce hits.  In 2014 Rick Hall was given the Grammy Trustees Award by the Recording Academy for his 50-year body of work in the music business.
